Sharper Iron — The Fifth Evangelist - Isaiah 2:1-5: The Tallest Mountain of All

Isaiah proclaims a ray of hope as he writes down the Word of God that he has seen. Mount Zion is topographically unimpressive, but it stands as the tallest of all theologically because that is the place where the LORD dwells among His people in His house. The LORD describes the days to come when He will draw all nations to Himself by the proclamation of His Word. As they learn His Word, they begin to walk in His ways as He gives them peace with Himself and with each other. The LORD has brought these promises to fulfillment in His Son, Jesus Christ, and in His Church. Since this is the glorious future that awaits, the prophet calls God’s people to walk in the light of the LORD right now.

Rev. Jeff Hemmer, pastor at Bethany Lutheran Church in Fairview Heights, IL, joins host Rev. Timothy Appel to study Isaiah 2:1-5.

The Mountain of the Lord

2 The word that Isaiah the son of Amoz saw concerning Judah and Jerusalem.

²It shall come to pass in the latter days
    that the mountain of the house of the Lord
shall be established as the highest of the mountains,
    and shall be lifted up above the hills;
and all the nations shall flow to it,
³    and many peoples shall come, and say:
“Come, let us go up to the mountain of the Lord,
    to the house of the God of Jacob,
that he may teach us his ways
    and that we may walk in his paths.”
For out of Zion shall go forth the law,^[a]
    and the word of the Lord from Jerusalem.
⁴He shall judge between the nations,
    and shall decide disputes for many peoples;
and they shall beat their swords into plowshares,
    and their spears into pruning hooks;
nation shall not lift up sword against nation,
    neither shall they learn war anymore.

⁵O house of Jacob,
come, let us walk
in the light of the Lord.
